Family Traditions #22

“Oh, there’s no place like home for the holidays,
‘Cause no matter how far away you roam
If you want to be happy in a million ways,
For the holidays – you can’t beat home, sweet home
For the holidays – you can’t beat home, sweet home!”

Last night was such a joy to see the passing of our holiday tradition of reading a Christmas story before the opening of gifts.  For years, both my husband and I would take turns reading different holiday themed stories, usually “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” was among the favorites.  This event was something I had held onto as a child from my own family traditions – and it was one that I wanted to pass down to my children as well.  Seeing my son, Kyle, read to his daughter, Zoey, was a magical moment and one that will be treasured!  ❤

In passing something old down to our kids, we wanted to also pass down something new.  So, along with the old of reading a book before gift-opening, Jordan and I would gather up the kiddos after dinner and take them around our neighboring community to look at all the wonderful display of lights.

And EVERY year on Christmas Eve, we’d eat a hearty dinner, pack the kiddos in the car and pace ourselves through the neighborhood street’s of lights.  The “Oooo’s and ahhhh’s” could be heard from the backseat for the first few rows of homes, but then it would start…“so when are we going to go home and open gifts?”

Crazy, how fast the years go by!  Now, to see our kids create the same waves of eager anticipation and excitement down to their children – it’s MAGICAL!
